Who are we?
Dr. Cary Goulard
Cary Goulard taught in the field of parks, recreation and interpretation for over 40 years at CSU Sacramento. He holds two PhD degrees, one from Syracuse University and the other from State University of New York College of Forestry and Environmental Sciences. His studies focused on effective communication of resource management issues, which lead to researching learning models and their relationship to interpretation. The Mindsight model is the result of over 30 years of research and field observations to connect interpretation and education.
Paul Covel
Paul Covel was the first municipal park naturalist in the country, at the country’s first wildlife refuge–Lake Merritt in Oakland, California. His books recount stories of people and wildlife, as well as exploits of some pioneer naturalists in California. Early on, Paul worked as a botanist and collector for the American Museum of Natural History and the California Academy of Sciences before settling in Oakland, where he worked as a naturalist for over 40 years.
Jim Covel
Jim Covel spent over 34 years at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, retiring as Director of Training & Interpretation. He has worked as a ranger and interpreter, as well as teaching at UC, Davis, CSU Sacramento and CSU Monterey Bay. He is a Founder and Fellow of the National Association for Interpretation. Jim has trained staff and volunteer interpreters for parks, zoos, museums and aquaria across the country in a career spanning 50 years.
